A text
message the previous evening from Phil MW0PJJ telling me that he was alerting
for GW/SW-011 at 11:30 meant Val and I had to make sure we started out quite
early from home to ensure an s2s contact.

Boggy bits - frozen
On the way up I picked up some chaser
points as Mike GW7HEM/p came booming in on 2m FM from Pen y Fan GW/SW-001 but
sadly I was too far from the summit to make it an s2s.
Snow on the Brecon Beacons..on the horizon
Mal was first in my log on the summit and informing
me that Phil and Ian were about to arrive on Sugar Loaf. They were very soon
in the log and followed quickly by John XOT…summit qualified…thanks everyone.

I plugged
the linear in for 40m although didn’t use it until Don RQL called in. It was
more or less an experiment today to see how long the 4Ah LiPO would last and what
signal reports I would get later. It was an orderly pile-up once again today
with many WAB chasers calling in for the trig, square and SOTA points…thanks
everyone. It was nice to hear Barry
M0IML calling in as he now has difficulty hearing anything at his QTH due to an
S8-S9 noise level.

After a cup
of coffee to warm us up and as Val was quite happy in the comfort of the bothy
bag I decided to visit 20m.
Out to change the links
With a spot sent via RRT I was away with a few
regular SOTA chasers making the log. Suddenly
I realised that I had a massive pile-up on my hands and suspected a spot had
gone up on the DX cluster….when a station asks you ‘who are you’ you seem to
realise that they are not a SOTA chaser (I do give my callsign quite often)….good fun and very pleased to get some
avid USA SOTA chasers in the log...had a few phantom contacts too….thanks
everyone.

Working the pile-up
I did try 15m
but the band was quiet and had no takers even with a spot via RRT. The battery to
the linear held out but I need to do a few more tests. As I was packing up Mike
GW7HEM/p was calling on 2m from Fan Fawr GW/SW-005 and was soon in the log…Thanks

My activation set up:- (HF)
Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) (4Ah LiPo), UK-MX
50M linear (for 817) and (4Ah LiPo), 3 band
link dipole (60/40/20 (+15m extensions),
(VHF) Yaesu FT270 (5watts)
into a ‘cable tie’ dipole.. Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
