GW/MW-004 Pen y Garn

GW/MW-004  Pen y Garn

17/09/2016

I was happily working in the garden ready for turning it over  for the  winter when an Alert came up for an activation of Pen y Garn.  It was Jonathan GW2HFR and as we had spoken on many occasions of a joint activation I sent him a quick message saying that I would join him. As my rucksack and radio equipment are always ready I was away within 15 minutes and on the road heading North…the garden could wait.  I was already on summit when Jonathan phoned to say he was nearing Devil’s Bridge and would be with me soon…some local knowledge was exchanged to make his route to the summit a little easier :)
My set up
The ever faithfull Yaesu FT270
I’d already had 8 contacts on 2m before Jonathan arrived including a bonus s2s with Karl on Snowdon but sadly missing Phil and Andy on Trichrug…they did however call me on their way home in the car…thanks both.  I did speak to MW6XRN/p on his way up to Pen y Fan but never got a another contact with him :(   I was leaving HF to Jonathan as I had already visited  the summit for Winter Bonus in February

Jonathan arrived soon after I finished on 2m but I prompted him to get the s2s with Karl who was still calling from Snowdon....in the log  :)

As I have always said it is well worth organising a joint activation with someone as it is nice to see how they approach an activation, this is especially so if you are starting out in SOTA.

Jonathan's Log
Now Jonathan and I have done a fair few summits but you are never too old to learn and it was great to see his Elecraft KX3 and homebrew linear in action and to discuss antenna configurations and designs for SOTA…we enjoyed quite a few hours of chatting and playing radio…more chatting than radio :)  …thanks Jonathan.

As yet Jonathan has not uploaded his log to the database but as soon as he does I will post it here.
My activation set up today:-  ) Yaesu FT270  (5watts) + 2m Dipole.  Antenna support - 7m Fishing pole.
Jonathan’s set up:- Elecraft KX3, homebrew linear with 9Ah LiPo, Antenna support – 10m Fishing pole with linked dipole.
Thanks everyone for the contacts.
